Holy Fathers Monastery

The Holy Fathers’ Monastery is a very important place of pilgrimage being one of the earliest Christian monasteries. It lies in a cave by the road down from Alexandros to Nikiana on a ridge of Skaros mountain.

The monastery was founded in 325AD by three Holy Fathers who returned to Lefkada accompanying Bishop Agatharchus of Lefkada back from the First Nicaea Council. This was the first gathering of bishops from across the Christian world that established the agreed doctrine or creed of the early church. Bishop Agatharchus played a key role in overcoming the Arian heresy and so establishing agreed doctrine.

The three monks returned to Lefkada and chose the cave as a monastery where they lived out their remaining lives fasting, in vigil and prayer. They were buried in the cave, under the altar, by a memorial lamp, and to one side where a spring of Holy Water still flows to this day.

Nobody knows the names of the Holy Fathers, however believers still visit this cave for prayer and miracles.

Recently the monastery functioned as a nunnery as a annex of St George’s Monastery nearby on Skaros. The last of the nuns died in 1978 and was buried in the courtyard of the monastery.
