St George’s Monastery

St George’s monastery was once one of the most important and wealthiest monasteries on Lefkada. It was founded (or possibly renovated) in 1611, although it may well have been in existence since the 1500s. The monastery nestles in the forests near the start of the footpath leading to Mount Skaros from the village of Kolyvata.

In 1727 the monastery is recorded as owning 708 acres of agricultural land with 900 sheep and goats. It also contained an important library. The church within its grounds dates to 1700. The entrance is through two marble columns supporting a lintel. The church was expanded in 1724 when wooden gilded icons and painted murals were created.

The Monastery celebrates on St Georges Day, April 23. If that date falls before Easter then the feast is delayed until after Easter Day.

The monastery is currently under renovation following earthquake damage and is normally closed to visitors whilst work is in progress. You can still see much from outside and from the trail running beside heading up Skaros.
