Lefkada is made up of limestone and few streams run on the surface except during the wettest parts of the winter. So accessible water is scarce on the island. This has always been the case in Alexandros that relied heavily on the three or four local springs.
Generally water was collected by the women. This was a hard and heavy task that needed doing on most days.
